Transition towns - getting started

It is easy to get started, although it will take time, energy and a commitment to see it through, but it will be worth it and you'll be joining an Australia wide network of communities all doing the same thing.

Transition Sunshine Coast is happy to help with the process of becoming a Transition Town. We represent the entire Sunshine Coast council region of 300,000 people, but are also involved in much smaller Transition Town initiatives in our own communities so we have the experience, expertise and training skills to help you out, no matter how big or small your Transition is.

The UK Network has all the information you need to get started in becoming a Transition Town.

  • Step 1 - Visit the Transition Towns WIKI site for everything you need to know about how to join the network
  • Step 2 - Take a look at the Kinsale Energy Descent Action Plan (PDF, 1.2MB) to get an idea of what's involved in that process
  • Step 3 - read the Transition Towns WIKI site Transition Initiatives Primer
  • Step 4 - find some 'running mates'. People in your community willing to help get this exciting initiative up and running
  • Step 5 - when you are ready - fill in the Transition Initiative criteria form to become an official initiative - available here
  • Step 6 - prepare - gather information, ideas and solutions before you head out into your community
  • Step 7 - start working with your community on the Transition Town 12-step plan available here
  • Step 8 - produce an Energy Descent Action Plan for your community
  • Step 9 - begin implementing those actions and moving from oil dependency to local resilience
  • We have been delivering Energy Descent Action Planning courses and Transition Town workshops in the community over the past 18 months and we are just about to deliver our region-wide Energy Descent Action Plan to the Sunshine Coast community, local, state and federal government.

Once our EDAP is delivered we will be focussing on not only achieving the goals set in that document, but also on delivering more courses and workshops to help new initiatives get started.

We can share with you our experiences in bringing together a regional EDAP for a population of 300,000 and also our own personal experiences starting Transition Towns in our local communities of around 800 people.
