About Transition Towns Sunshine Coast
An introduction by Sonya Wallace and Janet Millington...
Transition Sunshine Coast was estabished by Sonya Wallace and Janet Millington.
It started in July 2007 when we opened the Sunshine Coast Energy Action Centre (SEAC) after months of planning and research about how to generate an Energy Descent Action Plan for the region.
We ran SEAC as a community education centre at Yandina for a year. We offered weekly film screenings, guest speakers and free workshops on positive solutions to climate change and peak oil and we also ran Australia's first energy descent action planning course. The course in turn sparked Australia's first Energy Descent Action Plan and taught us a lot about what’s involved in bringing together a community to vision a future after oil.
In September 2007 we were invited to join the Transition Network - becoming the first in Australia and the first new initiative outside the UK. While an honour at the time, the significant ripple effect is still being felt.
We are now working to support other groups - both community and local council - through the same processes. Our aim is for the Sunshine Coast to become a leading example of positive solutions to energy descent preparedness through: Transition Networks, community co-operation, government support and social change for a better future.
